1918 - Jung published a paper “On the Unconscious” The prime function of the unconscious is the creation of symbols; we must be willing to recognize them. The unconscious is also relative to the epoch. What Jung draws is not artistic; it is a symbol whose meaning must be determined. 1919 - paper - “The Psychological Foundations of Belief in Spirits”. The unconscious becomes active in times of individual or societal upheavals. Related to this Jung investigated the concept of types. 1921 [1923 in English] the book Psychological Types was published. Now the concept of self as a psychological concept is realized. The self is a union of opposites; but what is that? {union of a anima and an animus}. The soul gives rise to images that may be used in an artistic way, or philosophic, or quasi-religious, or licentiously. A fifth way is needed, a psychological; psychology needs to distinguish itself from art, philosophy, and religion.
