Based upon a dream and a mandala Jung realized the self is the goal of individuation. The progression to self is not linear but is a circumambulatory process. The first phase is where one is established in the world; the second phase is a reevaluation of the first and the development of a personality. This could be called a mind-life crisis. The book to reference here is his 1926 revision of “The Principle of the Unconscious Processes” and the 1928 published “The Relation between the I and the Unconscious”. The key steps here are the integration of the anima and having a relationship with the mana personality. The self is the goal of life. Then comes preparation for death; here our individualization becomes a preparation for death and a new life after death.
