Dreams can be interpreted in a meaningful manner that gives information about the psychic state of the person and is done by a process that will be investigated in this book. The Primitive view of dreams thought that they were messages from the divine to predict the future. In antiquity it was recognized that dreams could involve just the present; but it could also predict the future or contain symbolic information that required interpretation. Aristotle tells us that dreams are not of a divine nature but art of being human; they might even be an indicator of a disease in the body. The mystic understanding of dreams is still strong. In the study of what is known about dreams there is no one theory that has developed; each thinker stands alone. This study will focus on the dream process and not dream-like phenomena such as hallucinations.
