Jung's Library

“The main content of Jung’s private library was contemporary literature of the 19th and 20th century, mainly about medicine, psychiatry, psychology and philosophy. Additionally there are a great number of books on antique cultures, gnosis, christian symbols, eastern religion, ethnology and occultism. The library also contains a collection of about 300 rare books (printed before 1800) on alchemy, theurgy and kabbala, as well as antique literature on dreams, writings of church fathers and of the latin and greek classic.”

We are now in January of 1922, the Soul tells Jung he needs to publish, to proclaim the new religion. It is a new ordering of human relations, not knowledge. Jung has the knowledge he needs; the way is symbolic. In a paper on the relation of analytical psychology and literature two types of writing are identified, one from the author and another that is writing that seizes the author. Nietzsche’s Zarathustra and Goethe’s Faust Part II are writings that have seized the author. The unconscious has released an archetypal image that releases the voice of the author.  These are the works that educate an era. Does psychology need to educate the age? Jung’s interest is in the psychology of religion. The flame that Christ had lit had been put out by the institutional church. The task of analytic psychology is to build a new church based on the religious experiences of individuals and their relationshipsIn 1924 Jung again worked on his manuscript of Liber Novus to prepare it for publication.
